An external perspective can keep you ahead of competitors, uncovering opportunities for growth & expansion
In motor racing, they use the phrase “target fixation” to describe the phenomenon where a driver focuses so much on an object, they become much more likely to crash into it.
Now if this object is the wall, then this is not good, the driver does not want to crash into the wall.
But if this object is the space in front of the driver ahead of them, then that’s a great place to be.
We can use target fixation in business really successfully – if we focus our attention on the right things, then we become much more likely to achieve those things.
If you focus yourself and your team on planning for opportunities, on maximising opportunities, on taking advantage of opportunities, then you become much more likely to crash into those opportunities.
By focusing your attention in this way, you give yourself the best chance of getting ahead of your competitors.
By continually refreshing where you are focusing your attention, you give yourself the best chance of staying ahead.
